LANCASTER TAKES TO THE STREETS

MAKE POVERTY HISTORY "What an extraordinary experience", said Bishop Patrick, "1/4 million people marching in solidarity with the poor throughout the world. Again I was astounded by the sheer number of young people in the march, and marvelled at their commitment and dedication. Many times throughout the day I repeated to myself the scripture text 'Blessed are the poor'." It was Saturday July 2nd and well over a thousand people from every part of our diocese, including the Bishop, had been part of the 1/4 million who had marched through Edinburgh in an effort to Make Poverty History. Just what the response of our political leaders will mean in practical terms is still being assessed, but that great human band around the centre of Edinburgh was a massive achievement leaving no doubt as to what millions want for the poor of the world, especially Africa.
