DODDING DAUBED IN NIMBY PROTEST
As The Voice reported last month
permission has finally been granted by the Inspectorate for the Department of the Environment to allow the establishment of the first Cenacolo Community in England in the old presbytery at Dodding Green, just north of Kendal. The Cenacolo Community works for the rehabilitation of drug addicts. At the time, Bishop Patrick said: “While we understand the fears of some of our neighbours, we do assure them that the community will adhere strictly to the conditions laid down by the Inspectorate. This, together with careful monitoring will prevent their fears being be realised.” Carefully chosen words. But last month the lovely old presbytery, with its ancient chapel, once home to relics of our own Lancaster martyrs, was vandalised by the daubing of “Not Welcome” signs on its walls. There had been a strong Nimby (Not In My Back Yard) protest, which originally delayed the granting of permission. Clearly, in spite of the permission, this protest has not gone away completely.
