OUT AND ABOUT
In The Good Old Summertime
What could be better this summer than getting to know our local holy people in the company of other members of the Faith? Northwest Pilgrimages have organised two such trips to help us do just that. Each trip occupies a full day and cost £13 each, though if you do both you get £5 back. The first outing is to Skirwith, near Kendal, the birthplace of John Bradburne and the second is to Ashton in Makerfield to see the “Holy Hand” relic of the martyr, St Edmond Arrowsmith.
John Bradburne was martyred in Zimbabwe on September sth 1979, having spent the last decade of his life as the warden of a leper colony in Mutemwa. His father was the Anglican Vicar of Skirwith where Bradburne was born. The cause for his beatification is supported by a number of people including our own Bishop Patrick.
Edmund Arrowsmith was hanged, drawn and quartered in Lancaster in 1628. He was born at Haydock near St Helens and by a life of Christian service and heroic death, he has brought many to the faith.
The trip takes place on Monday July 25th goes to John’s native place, Skirwith leaving Fernyhalgh at 8.00am and picking up at the Cathedral at 8.45 am arriving at Skirwith at 10.45 am. There is a full programme of events and sightseeing in the area before arriving back at Fernyhalgh t 6.00 pm.
The second trip takes place on Saturday, August 6th leaving from Lancaster cathedral at 8.30 am and picking up at Fernyhalgh at 9.30 am. It arrives at Ashton in Makerfield at 10.45 am. There is a very full day of events including Mass for the Feast of the Transfiguration. Last passengers should be back at Lancaster around 5.30 pm.

This paper’s editor, the Parish Priest of Holy Family, Blackpool, Fr Val Farrell, is pictured here with his sister Mollie and her husband John cutting a cake at a parish celebration marking the 40th anniversary of his ordination. Over 200 people what turned out to be a great reunion for many who had not seen each other for years. The evening was full of laughter and tears, and even Fr Val’s dog got a bag full of presents. Said John Baldwin of Lourdes fame, “we should have a do like this more often. It does you good.”
