STRIPPED

HUMANITY ASKS:

Where were you
when we were
swept away
in
the torrent,
gassed
in the camps,
made homeless
by war,
unjustly imprisoned,
left to starve
in the deserts,
robbed
of our rights,
burdened with grief,
treated
as naught?

GOD ANSWERS:

"For my part,
I made no
resistance,
Neither did I turn
away.
I offered my back
to those who struck
me,
my cheeks to those
who tore at my
beard;
I did not cover
my face
against insult and
spittle".

I WAS THERE, LOOK

BISHOP PATRICK ASKS THE NATIONS TO LOOK
At a service in the Cathedral for the victims of the Tsunami disaster on January 23, Bishop Patrick made a special plea to the rich countries of the world.
He asked that they honour pledges made for emergency humanitarian aid, and urged them to see that any aid given to the victims of this disaster must not affect the commitments already made to third world countries. Rich countries should respect pledges made to the UN's 2005 Humanitarian Appeal for those affected in the world's other major humanitarian crises: Sudan, Congo, Chechnya, and the Philippines. He called on Governments of rich countries to support the total cancellation, not just a moratorium, on all debt stocks owed by the tsunami affected countries. Finally, he asked that the extraordinary spirit of international solidarity brought about by the Tsunami disaster should be used to good effect. It should be used to make 2005 the year in which Governments make the Millennium Development goals a reality. They could make a start with an increased contribution to the aid budget and the immediate cancellation of the debt of the poorest countries. They should agree to reform global trade rules to liberate the poor and make firm commitments at the Doha Trade Round 2006
